The Microbiome: Simple Steps to Boost Your Gut Health
Aug 02, 2023Did you know you have an army of microbes living in your body? In fact, there are slightly more cells that compose your microbiome than your own body’s cells! Researchers vary on the exact number, but it’s at least 1 to 1. How crazy is that?!
The 100 trillion bugs that live in your gut control everything from your metabolism (weight maintenance), sugar regulation (diabetes), energy levels, digestion, immunity, mood, ability to relax, skin health, and more.
80% of your serotonin – the happiness hormone – is made in your gut. Research shows 70% of your immune system is headquartered in your gut. Gut microbes synthesize K and B vitamins that you can’t by yourself, preparing them for proper absorption. And the microbiome affects your elimination patterns and weight.
Suffice it to say, your microbiome matters.
How do you help this part of you be healthy? Well….what you think, what you feel, and what you eat all affect the microbiome.
When you eat a food, the undigestible part, the fiber, provides a home for the good bacteria to thrive. “Eat those greens” really does have validity! And oranges and blues and reds. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains provide fiber and nutrients the microbiome needs to grow.
Our microbiome is a mix of good guys and not-so-good guys. Simple carbs and sugars feed strains that can become frenemies – friends that, if left unchecked, can become enemies. These enemies then start to compromise your body’s function – hormone production, immune system balance, nutrient synthesis, and all the other many processes influenced by the microbiome. But this also means we can improve the microbiome with many different methods, including energy medicine.
The mind-body connection very much affects the health of your gut. I find in my work with hundreds of clients, these pathogenic strains in the gut are typically ‘feeding’ on negative energy in the body. The negative emotions of guilt, grief, shame, and fear can provide ‘food’ for these microbes. Past traumas and even belief systems that cause stress can change our microbiome...yes, this fact is proven in the medical research! What you feel changes the physiological activity of the microbiome.
As these emotional threads affecting the gut are healed and released, physical improvements happen. The gut achieves better balance due to the move toward balance. Healthy strains grow, pathogenic strains shrink. The gut achieves better balance. It’s like magic! Of course, this fact is also true of infections in other parts of the body, like Lyme and Strep - negative energy feeding pathogens and depressing the immune system - but that’s another conversation. ๐
There is much you can do to optimize your gut health. Choosing healthy foods, decreasing emotional stress, getting enough sleep, decreasing physical stress are just a few actions that can have a big impact. One of the best ways to get fast results in these areas, without having to relive trauma, is energy medicine.
