Not Always Good: When Routines Block Your Growth
Jul 26, 2023Are you a practical person? Realistic? Trust in what you can see, feel, touch? This may be hindering you from reaching your goals! Bear with me and I will explain.
Routine is soothing, comforting. Anyone with children knows a solid bedtime routine eases resistance, calms the body and mind, and helps little ones get to sleep and stay asleep.
We feel routine is good. And it is. But if routine keeps us locked in the same thoughts, the same actions and limits our ability to see something better, that’s when we have a problem.
Let’s talk about a few simple steps you can take to welcome the vibrant health and freedom you desire.
Mental Routines
Habitual thought is likely the number one issue keeping you stuck. Research from the National Science Foundation shows we have between 12,000 and 60,000 thoughts per day. Of those, 80% are negative and 95% are exactly the same as the day before. When you realize thoughts create emotion, you see how these sneaky thoughts, many subconscious, can rule your life and health.
I had the luxury of going on a three-day wellness retreat this summer. I noticed a massive change in my body, for the better, I believe because I cracked out of the conditioned thoughts I have at home that are part of my every day routine without me knowing about it. Huge motivation for me to uproot these negative thoughts that block progress!
Mental routines also keep us from being able to picture something better – to set goals. If we want to welcome something new in our lives, we must be able to visualize it and start taking steps to achieve it. Habitual negative thought can completely block this.
Tip: Find a single thought that makes you feel better when you are locked in negativity. Distraction is fine! The goal is to move toward a better feeling thought.
Emotional Routines
Emotion gets stored in our bodies. It doesn’t work to just suppress it and pretend it’s not there. This is denial and I routinely try it - and am reminded that is not the path of true healing! Pretending something doesn’t exist doesn’t make it go away, unfortunately. BUT, we can change our thoughts which changes our emotion which changes our energy.
We must learn to allow and process our emotion when it comes up. No need to get stuck in it, but we must acknowledge it. If you’d like help with this, check out the free emotional intelligence video series. You’ll learn skills to do just this.
Physical Routines
What physical routines help keep your energy stuck? Do you have dietary changes you need to make but don’t? Do you have postural imbalances that specific exercises might shift? Do you need to plan healthier meals for yourself but don’t make the time? Do you get enough sleep?
Simple lifestyle factors can have a massive impact on your energy and health. Shake up your physical routines, perhaps find just one that feels right to you, and add in something new. I’m recommitting to my afternoon walk because it’s a great transition from my work day to home, calms my nervous system, and helps me appreciate the beauty around me. Win-win.
Being able to picture what you want is the first step to welcoming positive change, whether it’s health, finances, relationships or work. Crack out of small every-day routines to start welcoming the change you desire. And watch your life start changing for the better! If you feel you cannot get traction to create change, let’s talk about how I can support you. You have the power to create the life you desire!
